2011.059 "Nike Got Nothin on My Swish"

A little manipulation on today's entry. It's a tiny digital fingerpainting but I switched the background from black to white to bring the color out a little more.

2011.057 "The Great Color Bender"

My kids like Avatar: The Last Airbender and watch it frequently. I wonder what it would be like to have the ability to bend things like air, water, fire, or space.

I thought if I had a superpower right now, with no physical alterations or wierd science what would it be? Then it hit me. I'm a color bender. Oh yeah, I can't wait to hear TJ's reaction to this one.

2011.056 "Flare"

I'm still working on luminosity and depth but this one turned out to be another top favorite. I didn't intend for there to be so much orange in this. Really! Ok, don't believe me. Ha.

This one is called "Flare".

2011.055 "Webby Splat"

I'm feeling pretty playful today, in case you can't tell from the title of today's blog piece. It's odd, funky, a little color and a little wierd.

Just enjoying the warmer weather and looking forward to the fun adventures the kids and I are heading for!

Have a terrific day everyone.

2011.054 "Sunset Storm Front"

Continuing my reflections on Kansas today. I can't tell you how many times over the years someone who does not live in Kansas has asked me about tornados. "Aren't you scared"?

No is the honest truth. I learned very young that the number of tornados that actually are life-threatening is very small. Not to disregard the devastation that has been caused to such towns as Hesston, Andover and Greensburg - just to name a few. When they are big enough to cause that kind of damage it is life-altering and nothing at all to make light of.

Most of the time severe weather in Kansas is an opportunity to see amazing things in the sky. The colors that can be seen in an approaching storm range from deep purple to varying shades of rather nauseating green. Blues, pinks, yellows, oranges, reds, even deep grey and scary black. It's all just incredibly beautiful.

Today's digipaint is my attempt to recreate a Kansas storm rolling in just as the sun is setting. I am enjoying playing with different brush strokes and layering colors for different effects in depth and luminosity.

2011.053 "Matrix Rift"

I fully realize the level of geek I am exposing today but here goes.

The Matrix trilogy is one of my favorite series of all time. I can't tell you how many times I've watched them. Even writing this I have the urge to snuggle in for a little Matrix marathon. :o)

This is my idea of what it would look like to Neo and the rest of the rebels if a rift began to form in the Matrix.

2011.052 "Wheat Shock"

Maybe it's my frame of mind lately but I can't seem to get enough of BRIGHT colors! :o)

In Kansas in the late summer you can drive out into the country and go for miles and miles with endless fields of golden wheat on both sides of the road. It's gorgeous and one of the things I truly love about Kansas.

For today's piece I was thinking about those wheat fields, and those long shocks of wheat. Because the colors are so bright they are almost shocking themselves I decided there was no more perfect name for this but "Wheat Shock".

2011.051 "Blacklight Daisy Trip"

In one of last week's posts I mentioned my favorite flower is the daisy. That reminded me of all the photos I have taken of daisies in recent years so I went exploring my archives and decided to play with one of those images for today's piece.

The result is a very trippy, tie-dye looking colorful creation. My mother would have absolutely loved this one I have a feeling.

2011.050 "Cosmic Lights"

Ther are two things I have set out to master in this journey. One is luminosity and the other is depth. Today's piece is a step closer to my goal of mastering luminosity in digital painting. Sometimes I prefer more complicated and busy designs but this one, although composed of many layers, is one of the more simple things I have created. Also one of the few days I didn't manage to work any orange into the piece before it announced it was finished. :o)

2011.049 "Cotton Candy Dandelion"

Today's piece is another mixture of new and old techniques. So brush strokes and hand drawn patterns here that were then spun out into a circular design that looks like a fluffy dandelion. The cotton candy reference is credited to my son, Kalon, who walked by my desk as I was finishing up and said "wow, that looks like cotton candy".

2011.048 "No Longer a Captive of the Wall"

Some days the emotions and the thoughts are there but I don't want to share. I didn't intend for this little experiment to be such an open book on my experiences. I'm thankful for what it is. Clearly there was more of a journey ahead than just making little digital creations and throwing them on a blog every day.

Anyway. There are some very exciting and positive things cooking in my life right now. Some of which I am certain I will share and some I am most certain I will not. However, as I create each day's blog piece I find a strage amalgamation of design and emotion occurring that I am helpless, and also lacking in desire, to hold back from happening.

So today's entry is one of those. I drew my inspiration from a lovely watercolor painting with spring colors and a dreamy floral pattern. I thought I might try to create something similar but about an hour into it I realized it was something vastly different...it is yet another reflection of my current state of being.

2011.047 "A Beautiful Implosion"

Continuing to work with newly learned digital painting techniques. I am thankful to have a tablet and pen because it helps so much with the brush strokes.

There are some pretty big emotions tied to what came out today. An implosion is what? An inward compression...a collapse. A destruction of a core construct that causes a chain reaction from the outside in.

My favorite flower is the daisy, always has been. The design near the center is hand drawn and supposed to be a rough reprentation of that happy and dainty yet incredibly durable little flower I love so much. My idea here is that something beautiful began to bloom inside and as it grows it takes over until all the colors around are pulled into it and a bright, colorful, unique and perfect flower is all that remains. Can you see this happening here?

2011.046 "Burning Love"

A hunka hunka....

So it's Valentine's Day. The most romantic day of the year or something like that. LOVE has been on my mind for weeks now but not the goofy, chocolate and flower bearing, gooey romance kind of love. The love that's been on my mind is the kind that seems to be an eternal flame of compassionate devotion.

What does love mean to you?

2011.045 "Colorwashed Sunbeams"

Have you ever been sitting still in a chair with a wide beam of sunlight coming in through a nearby window? I bet you know what I'm talking about...the sunbeam catches all the little dust and dirt particles in the air and for a moment it all kind of sparkles as it floats there suspended in that warm ray of light. It's rather mesmerizing and pretty.

Then reality hits and you realize the utter ineffectivness of your vacuum cleaner. Ha!

Ok so if the little particles weren't...well...what they are, then maybe they'd be happy little swirls. Yes, we'll go with that.  :o)

2011.044 "300 Miles of Red Lace Licorice"

Mixing some new techniques with some old favorites here. This compound image has 16 layers of different goodies mixed in. Before I worked on the background it hit me just how much the twisting, twirling design in the foreground looks like a bunch of red lace licorice. Like maybe several hundred miles of the stuff was layed out in a funky pattern. This made me giggle to think about. I wonder how long it would take to actually make a similar design with 300 miles of red lace licorice?  :o)

2011.043 "Fireworks in Snow"

I love random, everyday beauty. If you take a moment to look around you I bet you could spot at least 5 things you didn't quite notice before. Look for patterns, shapes, intersting configurations...just look.

Last spring I worked on the flower beds to the left and right of my front porch and bordered them with a little decorative garden fencing and some small solar lights. When the project was complete and the sun had set I was in awe of how sweet those little lights looked lighting the edges of my flower beds.

In Kansas we've had a lot of snow lately, I think more than usual but I couldn't say for certain. I should have probably pulled my fencing and lights before winter but I didn't think of it until it was too late.

Last evening my dad came by the house to pick up my oldest son for a little outing. When he came to the door he said "do you see that little light in the snow...it's so pretty". I jumped into my boots and grabbed my camera because I didn't want to miss it! Sure enough, peeking just over the top of the snow one of my little solar lights had somehow managed to get enough light exposure to be glowing just as brightly as could be. I'm glad my dad pointed it out because it truly was beautiful the way the light cast a star-like pattern on the sparkly snow.

So today's blog piece is based on the photo of my dad's discovery. Sometimes in my creations I like to begin with a photo and this one lent itself just perfectly.  The first image is today's piece, "Fireworks in Snow". The second is my original photo - as pointed out by my dad.

2011.042 "Primary Beginnings"

Most of my digital art begins with something very simple. I've said it before but when I'm creating something from scratch with no previously established challenge (such as "make chamagne") I never know what will be there when it finally feels done.

The easiest place to begin is with one or more colored blocks and work it out from there. This morning I started in and it was shaping up to be a very detailed and complicated creation. Once I got my blocks layed out the way I wanted I started in grouping and shaping and suddenly the whole thing winked at me and said, "that's it, I'm done".

Allrighty then! So no twisting, swirling, wisping, fractal spinning or wave making today. Just simple, primary blocks. Something about the rudimentary-ness <wink> of this just makes me smile.

2011.041 "Nothing Gold Can Stay"

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

2011.040 "Copper Cauldron"

If there's any inspiration at all for today's entry it's how, if we allow them to, the fires of life can cause a refining of the human spirit - a revelation of something truly amazing we never knew was there before.

Most of you know enough of my story to know the past two years have been extremely difficult for my family and I. There have been many, many, MANY days when I wondered if we would survive the fire we were standing in but we have. In fact we've done more than survive, we've thrived!

Late yesterday I allowed a bit of unhappy news to really drag my mood and my thoughts way out into the desert of despair where I camped out until this afternoon. I didn't even realize how bad I was feeling until I got some more encouraging news earlier today.

I was able to quickly recover by reminding myself that I can let the fires of life burn me out or I can let them burn away the unwanted and ugly things and leave me with something truly beautiful.

This one is called "Copper Cauldron".

2011.039 "Ripples in a Sunset Current"

I love summer! It's probably why I have stayed in Kansas as long as I have. Sure, along about August it's hotter than...well...it's hot. Still, I would take a week of 100+ temps over negative wind chills anytime.

It's been so cold and more snow is on the way and that, in the words of my youngest son TJ, makes my sad!

This morning I had summertime, camping at a lake and big orange sunsets on my mind as I started working on today's piece.

2011.038 "A Handful of Packers"

I'm not a football fan. Never have been. I can't say I never will be because I have enjoyed watching my nephew Caleb play and have a very rudimentery understanding of the game itself. Still I struggle to find professional football interesting in anyway. Baseball...well that's a different story altogether and one for another day.

I did watch part of the game last night, but only for the commercials. Funny but it's the one time every year that I don't mind the tv being on for several hours straight and I don't make everyone mute the commercials!

So it's no surprise that Sunday's blog piece is inspired by the Green Bay Packers and their win of Superbowl XLV. With my own little "twist" of course.

2011.037 "LyveWyre"

My youngest son, TJ - who I often refer to as "TJ Tornado" - has his first school friend sleepover this evening. It's a milestone event in his little life because for the first time he has a best bud. It's been a tremendous challenge for him to make friends at all, let alone have any that he considers close enough to call his best friends.

Watching TJ and his buddy play all I could think about was how much energy these little guys have. It's just NUTS! They're a couple of live wires - no doubt about it.

Today's blog piece is inspired by the live wires running through my house and tackling each other like pro football players. I'm having so much fun watching TJ with his friend. It's crazy but it's magical. :o)

2011.036 "Simply Soothing"

It's been a terrible day! I've not been this sick in so long I can't remember the last time. All day long I just wished for something soothing. I don't have much to say, still feeling so lousy, but I sat down and tried to think of what perfectly soothing would look like for me today.

So this is "Simply Soothing".

2011.035 "Swimming in Glasswater Caverns"

Earlier in the day when I posted this I was just about as close to having a migraine headache as I ever hope to be again. I'm sure everyone has at least one thing that they find soothing when feeling sick or blue, or red or gray for that matter.

For me it's water. Always has been. The sound, the sight of sunlight or stars reflecting off the surface, the smell, the feel of being submerged...water immediately eases my tensions and clears my mind.

Yesterday I took my sons to a new barber. He was a wonderful conversationalist and an even better barber. One of the many stories we heard in the span of the 30 minutes we were in his shop was about a new television series about underwater cave exploration. I can't remember the name of the show but the idea of exploring underwater caverns sounds awesome to me. One of the vacations I hope to take soon is to Mexico to explore the cenotes and float the underground river.

Because I haven't been feeling well I've had water on my mind. Not literally!

So today's piece was inspired by the stories of the underwater caverns. It's my idea of what one of these caverns would look like were the walls made of glass instead of earth and stone.

2011.034 "Pinecone Dreams of Early Spring"

Today's weather was so dreadful! Honestly I don't know what I'm still doing in the midwest and I hope to get out of here very soon. Not that I mind snow, in fact I rather like it's fluffy whiteness and all the fun activities that can happen in fresh snow. What I don't like is the wicked wind that slices right to the bone regardless of how many layers I am wearing. Also, in case you are unaware of US geography, Kansas is not exactly a hotspot for winter sports.

I was dreaming of spring and wondering what all the little plants and animals were doing. Most likely they were doing exactly what I was doing...huddling as tightly as possible and refusing to move once they got warm!

So I started out with a two-tone twist and decided to spin it out into a fractal. It's been a few days since I spun a fractal and I was missing it. As this one stacked around itself I noticed the inside shape looked a lot like the layers of a pinecone.

If a pinecone weren't inanimate do you think it would dream? I think the tightly closed tiny little bud of a pinecone would be huddled in and in it's dreams would feel warm sunshine and see itself in bright spring colors. So in my mind this is how a pinecone's spring dream would look.

2011.033 "Paintball Erosion"

My son Kalon gave me considerable help with today's piece. I've not been in a very good frame of mind for this today. Not that I'm in a bad or sour mood, just so darn cold I can't get my creative bones to stop shivering long enough to make sense of much. So thank you, KB, for lending your own creative genius to mom's madness today.

This is the last of the hard use of the new techniques. I've got some more ideas and don't want to get stuck on this particular style. I will say that this technique lends itself...strike that...it DEMANDS to be colored boldly. :o)

So here's the entry for today, "Paintball Erosion".
